BOOK REVIEW: RESURRECTING SUNSHINE

Blurb (Goodreads):
At seventeen, Adam Rhodes is famous, living on his own, and in a downward spiral since he lost the girl he loved. Marybeth stage name Sunshine was his best friend from the days they were foster kids; then she was his girlfriend and his band mate. But since her accidental death, he's been drinking to deal with the memories. Until one day, an unexpected visitor, Dr. Elloran, presents Adam with a proposition that just might save him from himself.
(I decided not to use the whole synopsis because that explains everything that's going on in this story)

Publication Date: October 1st, 2016.

Thoughts: Okay, so this book is not about a typical rockstar who loses his famous girlfriend, is tremendously heartbroken, and drinks himself to oblivion (it is though), but it is so much more than that. We follow Adam, who lost his girlfriend Marybeth to the ocean, one year after the tragedy had happened. To cope up with his loss, he drank too much and loses himself day after day. No one has seen him or heard from him much. Then one day a doctor (Dr. Elloran) shows up at his door claiming that they could bring his girlfriend back (WHAAAT), and it's up to Adam, if he agrees. He of course does. And then the story begins.
Dr. Elloran tells him about the Orpheus Project and how Marybeth/Sunshine can be cloned and resurrected with the help of the memories locked in his brain. He is then taken away to an island (all so secretively) and it is the base for Project Orpheus. Now they have to carry out 3 Phases to complete the process of resurrecting Sunshine, all of which includes matching Sunshine's memories with Adam, living their memories again and then being placed in kind of real life simulation processes. During this process Adam gets so overwhelmed with the memories of his Marybeth and their lives together, her life before she became Sunshine and in the end he can't help but wonder that if the new clone will be the same girl that he had always wanted- Marybeth, and not Sunshine.
At first, this book started out really fast. I couldn't quite point a finger to what was going on, even if it was to easy to understand. All I'm saying is that it was too abrupt. The story started and we could see Adam was grieving Marybeth's loss, drinking, and then suddenly Doctor Elloran jumps in with all her science stuff (being a little vague) and telling Adam that they could bring Sunshine back. I needed more background to the story than that. I didn't exactly knew who Marybeth/ Sunshine was and why there was a distinction of name made? But the story did pick up right after that.
On the Island we see, Adam has to go through his memories of Marybeth again. We can see how a troubled past can make who we our in our lives, why we are who we are. The most emotional part for me was when Adam has to go through those simulation processes, and I can see why he reacts the way he does, talking to someone who you've lost, holding them, seeing them smile. Isn't that what all of us who have lost someone want? To get a last chance to talk to that person, to see them. The author depicts all these emotions quite accurately.I like Gen as a character, who is also the daughter of the founder of Project Orpheus, her character balances the dullness we feel by Adam mourning Marybeth. We also get to live life with Marybeth in Adam's memories and see his love for her. The Author has so nicely molded all these characters that we know where they are coming from, what is their life story and why they were doing what they were doing. This book also focuses on how people learn to cope up with their losses in different ways and how they make even the biggest of sacrifices for the one's they love.
The author has done a wonderful job on this book. It is a very easy read, and I went through the book in a jiffy. I was always on the edge to know what would happen next, and even though the book wasn't a thriller in the traditional sense, but it sure had some very nice curves and edges to it. I could see how the book was unraveling, but when it actually happened, I was blown away nonetheless. At last, the question which this story brings to light is that,How far would you go to bring the person you love, back to life? And at what cost. And if you were to clone a person and give them the same memories as before, will they ever be the same?
I highly recommend everyone to read this book.
